Here is a worksheet on elections and voting.  With the 2012 elections coming up next school year I wanted to do some sort of worksheet to get my kids involved with the voting process.  Now remember, most of my students can not write on their own without copying from a source.  I try not to do all my worksheets with a lot of written answers.  Some of my slower kids spend the whole period trying to keep up writing the answers that I feel like they miss the whole lesson.  And, since they can't read what they wrote anyway I don't find it necessary to do all the time.  Quite a few of my worksheets, even though they have places for answers,  are never written on by the students.  I write the answers on the board, and they participate.

Fiesta Warm-Up

This year we have broken our summer school into four themed weeks.  Our third week will be Mexican fiesta week!  We are making pinatas and on the Friday will serve nachos, which will be a huge hit!  We only have 4 hours a day and soooo much to do since we are only actually at our school site three of those days! Here is my weekly warm up worksheet we will use with our theme.

Personal Hygiene

I am trying to get some cover sheets on some of the curriculum I have sitting here.  This has been a slow process.  I just starting using Power Point a little over a week ago, and so far so good.  The folks on TpT have been great answering my questions and helping me out.  Tutorials are great!!!  Will post more as I make them.

Morning Warm Up Hawaiian Style

This is one of the finishing touches to my extended school year curriculum.  This summer we have picked themes for all four weeks.  I posted a bingo game we are going to do during our week of Olympics. and will post another worksheet soon that will go well with our Mexican fiesta week.  This warm up will be great, one morning of our Hawaiian Luau week.  We plan on making leis one day with some cute flowers I bought from Oriental trading company.  On the Friday we will have a Hawaiian Luau complete with food the students will help prepare!  If you want a copy of this it is free at my TpT store.

Olympic Bingo

One of our weekly themes for this years summer school is the olympics.  I have done the bingo thing before with safety signs and the kids loved it.  They will need to cut the bingo pieces out and paste them on the board in random order.  When I call the bingo cards, there will be a few I will have to explain, but great for them to learn.

Stranger Danger

Here is a fun worksheet I did with my students yesterday.  Most of my students do not write without copying, so we did this verbally.  My kids are so into role play that we didn't get past question number one before someone asked if they could come up and practice in from of the class.  This is probably my cue to start some sort of drama club.  We spent almost an hour going over scenarios and of course the kids had stories of their own to tell.  Hope you enjoy!

Activity Checklist

My students are all over the board when it comes to the time it takes them to finish assignments.  Here is an activity checklist that each student has in their folders for when they complete their classwork.  It lists most of the things I have on my shelves.  I have my aides give the students a choice of 3 activities on the list and the students pick which one they want to do that day.  The primary reason I did this was because I have a couple autistic boys who wanted to do the same activity over and over.  This way there is variety and they really seem to like marking things off their lists.  About half the students in my class have never even had to look at their activity checklists.

Goal Chart

Now, I haven't actually tried this goal sheet, but I am in desperate need of it, so I am going to give it a try starting Monday with a couple of my students.  Fast food Fridays I am pretty sure will be our "goal" of the week with most of my students who bring money.  But, we have a lot of fun things we do that will work as well.  I may have to revamp this,  I will let you know.

Grocery Shopping

See something, hear something, do something.  I like every class I do to have all three elements.  I am in the process of putting a curriculum together for next year.  I have been saving empty grocery items here and there, and plan to use them with my students for some comparison shopping practice.  This worksheet will be great to get us started!

Laundry

Here is another life skills worksheet.  I wish all my students did their own laundry.  Unfortunately I still have students whose parents will not allow this to happen.  Doesn't mean I'm going to quit trying! 

I believe I only have about 4 more worksheets to make to finish out my "One life skills a week workbooks".  I'm struggling on one on voting, and still working on another one on basic first aid and another on home safety.  I will post them when I finish.

I can.....

I have attended two Why Try seminars in the last 10 years and have loved them! This material is adapted from some worksheets I took back with me. I have had to retype them to accommodate the level of students I currently work with. Most of my students are at a lower level in their abilities than the worksheets I had from Why Try. This will be a great tool in accessing the abilities of each student as they enter my class.

Math Assessments

The worksheet here shows the math range of the students I currently have in my class.  My hope next year is to get a couple other teachers involved to put the students into different groups according to their abilities for money/math classes.  I currently teach this twice a week.

I'm not picky, put me with the students still working on numbers or with the students trying to make change.   Either way, I think the student can progress further if given the chance to work at their current level.  I am hoping this worksheet here will help assess the students to their current level.

Here is another life skills worksheet.  I would love to end this lesson with an actual trip to a restaurant.  But, before I do that, I think it would be fun to turn my classroom into a "restaurant", me and my aides can dress as waiters, have the students order from the lunch menu, and serve them as if we were at a restaurant.  Let's see if they remember what they learned!

Pet Care

Since I started working in my current classroom, I have been making worksheets here and there and pulling from wherever I can for ones to fill in.  Each year (3) has gotten smoother and more organized, but next year I want to have everything in 3 ring folders, ready for the students to grab for that class.  So, my goal is to have 4 folders per student.   Folder #1 Morning Warm up folder- I started this one at the end of this year.  My students arrive at different times in the morning within a 30 minute time frame.  They grab their "yellow" folders on their way in and sit down and start working.  We write a morning message, log the temperature and weather from our newspapers and than do a worksheet inside the folder.  These worksheets require a little help and mostly contain subjects the students are familiar with (time, calendar skills, market/restaurant math, newspaper skills, money etc).  So far it's been working out great. Let me also say that I have 4 amazing aides in my classroom that help me accomplish this! My other 3 folders will be, social skills, money/math, and life skills.   I teach each one of these subject once a week so I will need roughly 37 - 45 minute lessons in each of the folders.  Time to get working!  Here is a lesson I did on pet care.  This will be added to my life skills curriculum.

Birthday Graph

Here is another graph we did at the beginning of the year.  I had the students walk around and speak to each of the other student and aides, to get everyones birthday months and correct name spellings.

Newspaper Alphabet Match

I am not sure why, but my class this year loves to cut and paste.  Today in their morning folders they had to cut and paste pictures from food magazines (between me and my mother they have an endless supply) that represented the 5 food groups.  5 pictures of each food group, what fun we had!   Here is another cut and paste we did earlier in the year using our newspapers.
